The Mindful Attention Awareness Scale (MAAS) is a self-report questionnaire designed to measure an individual’s trait-like capacity to be mindful and attentive to the present moment. The MAAS was developed to assess the frequency at which people have experiences of mindful awareness in daily life.
The scale consists of statements related to one’s ability to pay attention to the present moment, such as “I find it difficult to stay focused on what’s happening in the present” or “I tend to walk quickly to get where I’m going without paying attention to what I experience along the way.” Respondents rate how frequently they experience such thoughts or behaviors on a scale from “almost always” to “almost never.”
The MAAS is often used in research and clinical settings to assess an individual’s level of mindfulness. Higher scores on the MAAS indicate a greater capacity for mindful awareness. It has been used to study mindfulness in various contexts, including its relationship with psychological well-being, stress reduction, and the treatment of various mental health conditions.
