The Acceptance and Action Questionnaire (AAQ-II) is a self-report assessment tool used in psychology and psychotherapy to measure an individual’s level of psychological flexibility. It is based on the principles of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), which is a therapeutic approach aimed at helping individuals become more accepting of their thoughts and emotions while taking committed action towards their values and goals. Higher scores equal greater levels of psychological inflexibility.
The AAQ-II consists of a series of statements or questions related to an individual’s willingness to experience uncomfortable thoughts and feelings without trying to avoid or control them. Respondents rate their agreement with each statement on a scale, and their scores are used to assess their level of psychological flexibility.
The AAQ-II can be a useful tool for therapists and researchers to measure an individual’s ability to tolerate distressing thoughts and emotions and their willingness to take action in line with their values. It can be valuable in clinical settings for assessing and tracking changes in psychological flexibility over the course of therapy.
