This booklet is designed with the following aims in mind:
- To provide support for children ranging from ages 5-6 up to ages 10-11 during a crucial period of change in their lives.
- To emphasise the significance of developing strategies to effectively cope with change.
- To empower children to identify what brings them feelings of positivity and well-being on an individual level.
- To assist children in recognising the challenges, or ‘tricky things,’ that can negatively impact their well-being when faced with change.
- To encourage children to identify individuals who can offer assistance, also known as ‘helpers.’
- To facilitate self-reflection and preparation for impending changes.
This workbook offers a structured approach for children in this situation, enabling them to:
- Reflect on the changes they have already experienced in their lives.
- Determine their anticipations and concerns regarding future changes.
- Create a plan that includes elements that enhance their well-being (referred to as ‘feelgoods’), potential challenges (‘tricky things’) that might affect their well-being negatively, and individuals who can provide support (‘helpers’). Additionally, it helps them acknowledge the preparations they have already made for the new school year.
- Engage in short, weekly reflection sessions to identify what has supported them during the week, what difficulties they’ve encountered, and who has been there to assist them. It also provides ideas to aid them in handling challenges they may face in the future.
