The NATS Information Sheet is a child-friendly CBT resource created by WeHeartCBT to help younger children understand what Negative Automatic Thoughts (NATS) are and how to manage them. NATS are the unkind or unhelpful thoughts that pop into our heads and can make children feel sad, anxious, or bad about themselves. This printable tool explains in simple language that while everyone has NATS from time to time, they can become a problem if they happen too often or stop us from doing the things we enjoy.
Through colourful examples and relatable prompts, kids are guided to notice when NATS appear and start replacing them with more positive, helpful thoughts—such as “I am doing my best”, “I am brave”, or “I can do this.” It uses basic CBT principles to gently show how thoughts, feelings and actions are connected.
This worksheet supports children to:
-
Identify common negative thoughts and how they make them feel
-
Understand that thoughts are not always facts
-
Practise positive self-talk to feel more confident and in control
-
Learn a simple and effective mental health strategy that builds emotional resilience
