Look for the Clues Anxiety Worksheet for Children

Child-friendly anxiety worksheet titled Look for the Clues with four boxes asking what the worry is saying, what facts are known, what is being guessed, and one more balanced thought.

Children can slow down anxious thinking by separating worries from facts, then building a more balanced thought. The detective-style prompts make this anxiety worksheet easy to use with kids who are learning to question worry thoughts, spot assumptions and practise simple CBT-style thinking skills at home, school or in sessions.

Parents, carers, primary teachers, counsellors and child therapists may find this printable most useful for children who tend to jump to scary conclusions, overthink situations or get stuck on “what if” worries. It is especially suited to younger children who benefit from visual, simple and concrete prompts rather than long written explanations.

The page is set out as a “Look for the Clues” activity, with four large writing boxes. Children are asked: “What is my worry saying?”, “What facts do I already know?”, “What am I guessing?” and “One more balanced thought:”. These questions guide a child through checking their anxious thought in a calm, structured way.

In practice, it could be used after a worry has been named, such as fear about school, friendships, tests, bedtime, separation or trying something new. An adult can sit alongside the child and help them fill in each box, encouraging them to notice the difference between evidence and guesses without dismissing how they feel.

The worksheet links well with CBT for children, anxiety management, worry work, emotional literacy and problem-solving activities. The playful detective theme, magnifying glass imagery and short prompts make it suitable for a classroom calm corner, a therapy session, pastoral support, SEN support or a home coping-skills folder.
