Challenging Uncontrollable Worry Beliefs PDF Tool – FREE

Worry postponement is the central skill in this module, used alongside CBT-style evidence checking to test the belief that worrying cannot be controlled. It is aimed at people who feel stuck in constant worry, rumination or anxious “what if” thoughts and want a structured way to challenge the idea that worry has taken over.

This Challenging Uncontrollable Worry Beliefs PDF tool is a structured worksheet for exploring the thought that worry is impossible to control. It guides users to notice how strongly they believe this idea, consider what keeps it going, and compare it with real experiences where worry has shifted, reduced or been delayed. The focus is on practical reflection rather than trying to force worries away.

It can be used in CBT-informed sessions, guided self-help, wellbeing support or home learning for people who experience frequent “what if” thoughts, rumination or anxiety about everyday situations. The resource includes prompts for weighing up evidence for and against the belief, detective-style questions, and space to write a more balanced conclusion. It also introduces a worry postponement experiment, helping the user compare suppression with setting a planned time to return to a worry.

Use the pages as a printable worksheet, a session handout, or a step-by-step guide for planning a worry postponement practice between appointments. It is most relevant for adults, university students and older teenagers, as well as counsellors and CBT practitioners supporting work around generalised anxiety, excessive worry, anxious thoughts and worry control strategies. View, download or print the PDF to use as part of a calm, structured approach to understanding worry beliefs. Developed by the Centre for Clinical Interventions.
