Use this anxiety signs poster to help children, teenagers or adults put words to what they notice in their body, thoughts, feelings and daily routines. It offers a clear, printable prompt for conversations at home, in school pastoral support, counselling sessions or wellbeing groups.
In a classroom, family home or therapy room, the poster can give a young person a simple starting point when they are finding it hard to explain anxiety, worry or nervousness. It is particularly suited to children, teens and teenagers who may recognise physical symptoms or changes in behaviour before they can describe how they feel.
Six areas of anxiety are set out in straightforward language: body, thoughts, feelings, behaviour, focus, and sleep and energy. Body signs include a fast heartbeat, shaking, feeling hot, sweating, dizziness, shortness of breath, tense muscles and an upset stomach. The thoughts section covers persistent worry, expecting something bad to happen, “what if” thinking and repeatedly going over concerns.
Other panels identify feeling frightened, restless, irritable, overwhelmed or unable to relax; avoiding people, places or situations; checking repeatedly; seeking reassurance; and wanting to leave. The focus and sleep sections cover difficulty concentrating, making decisions or finishing tasks, alongside trouble falling asleep, restless sleep, waking in the night and daytime tiredness.
Parents, carers, teachers, school nurses, pastoral staff and child therapists can print the anxiety symptoms chart as a visual check-in tool. A child or young person could point to relevant signs, circle them after printing, or use the categories to discuss when anxiety first shows up and what support may be needed. The closing reminder encourages earlier responses when signs become intense, frequent or disruptive to daily life.
